Honeymoon or Summer Getaway in the Works? Don’t Forget This New Travel Requirement

Among all that you need to plan such as accommodations and transportation and ensuring that you’ve packed everything from swimsuits to phone chargers, there’s one more thing couples should add to their travel list this summer: the REAL ID.
Homeland Security is allowing a gradual phase-in for air travel changes, with an official deadline set for May 7, 2023. Starting that day, travelers from all states will need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or another acceptable form of ID to fly commercially within the U.S. Stereotypically, the last thing a newlywed wants to think about is packing, but whether you’re heading off to an island locale, or just touching down in the continental U.S. before your next flight abroad, readiness is key.
Here’s a simple guide for newlyweds and travelers alike.
What Exactly Is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a government-issued driver’s license or identification card that meets enhanced federal security standards. You’ll know you have one if there’s a gold star or other indicator in the top corner of your card. The new IDs were designed to enhance travel security and even their issuance requirements between states.
What If You Don’t Have a REAL ID?
If your current driver’s license is not REAL ID compliant, don’t panic. You can still fly if you provide an alternate form of acceptable identification at the airport. These include:
- A valid U.S. passport
- A Global Entry card
- A permanent resident card
- Other trusted traveller documents
A complete list is published on the TSA website.
If you don’t possess any of these, TSA agents might ask you to perform an in-person identity verification. This can mean all sorts of extra screening and delays — and there’s no guarantee you’ll be let through — so it is hardly ideal for a stress-free honeymoon.
Should You Get to the Airport Earlier?
That depends. If you don’t bring a REAL ID or alternative ID, you should arrive for your flight at least three hours before takeoff to allow time for screening. If you do have the proper ID, there is no further preparation necessary. C.C.S.: It has not yet led to any major disruption at U.S. airports, but give yourself a buffer whenever you are traveling for something as important as your honeymoon.
How Are the Lines to Get a Real ID?
If you want to get a REAL ID in time for that summer trip, better hustle. The rush to travel is leading to longer DMV wait times in many places. In some states, you need an in-person appointment to get your REAL ID, while in other states, online applications are accepted — the rules depend on the state. Visit your state DMV’s website for the most current information.
No available appointments? Don’t give up. Some states are extending their hours or opening more slots to accommodate the surging demand.
Tip: Besides the above reasons, don’t let ID woes ruin your honeymoon or summer travel plans. Spend a few minutes today to ensure that you’re in compliance — and you can travel with confidence.
