7 Sweat-Proof Makeup Tips for Hot Summer Weddings

Summer weddings are undeniably romantic—bright skies, warm evenings, and sunshine-filled ceremonies make it a popular season to say “I do.” Not everyone can plan their wedding in summers but, everyone dreams of having a ceremony that people can remember for the longest time of their lives. But as temperatures heat up and the humidity rises, looking picture-perfect from vows to the last dance can be tough. Throw in a frantic whirlwind of emotions, nerves and endless celebrating, and there stands an opportunity for some makeup meltdowns.
So to make sure you stay cool all day long (while looking cool, too), we turned to professional makeup artist Natalie Raye, who’s done everything from summer weddings to high-stress beauty looks and more, to get all her tips for sweat-proof makeup that will truly last. With some planning and the right products, you can enjoy your big day without worrying about your makeup sliding off.
Work with a Pro
This is not a time to take your friend up on her skills as a DIY makeup artist—especially if you will be getting married under the summertime sun. “You really want to hire a makeup artist who knows how to survive long events and hot weather,” explains Raye. “I’ve had clients report their makeup never moved, not even after midnight. That is the benefit of hiring someone who has experience.”
Investing a little extra money for an experienced artist can be the difference in longevitiy and quality of your look.
Prep Skin Properly
It may feel wise to avoid moisturizer in the heat, but Raye doesn’t recommend it. “Hydrated skin is necessary (even in hot weather). It guarantees the makeup goes on smooth and not cakey.”
Begin with a light moisturizer appropriate for your skin type. If your skin is oily, you’re best off opting for a gel-based formula. After hydrating, layer with a mattefying base for shine control and a long-lasting base.
Use a Light Hand
Less is more when it comes to warm-weather makeup. “I think multiple layers are not the answer, so try and avoid that,” Raye cautions. “Too much stacking will result in a build up of product that could melt or move,” she said.
Instead, she suggests using color-correcting concealer where it is needed before applying a light foundation with a natural matte effect. For extra dimension and glow, apply a wash of cream blush first, followed by a powder blush to set the color (blush gets washed out first in the heat).
Set Strategically
The key to setting your makeup is in the how — not just the using of right products. Raye suggests diffusing any fine lines or creases that developed before powdering. I’ll pull up the chin and check beneath the eyes, around the smile lines. “Until I am smooth in everything, then I set.”
Opt for translucent setting powders that have staying power without the weight, and follow with a setting spray to meld the layers together. “A good setting spray melds your powders and creams together, helping your look to last and look more natural.
Lock in Every Feature
You might have achieved a flawless base, but you still have the rest of your face to do. As for lips, Raye says go for long-wear and then top with a gloss for all-day wear. “The liquid base provides staying power, and the gloss refreshes everything without requiring a mirror.”
For the eyes, accursed waterproof formulas work to your favor—specifically for liner. “Gel liners work really well for the waterline and last much longer than pencils, and can hold their ground against tears and sweat,” she says.
Limit Touch-Ups
You’ll be tempted to check your makeup at various intervals throughout the day; make sure you don’t touch up too much. “I don’t want my clients to touch their makeup all day,” Raye says. “Just a little bit of powder and some oil blotting sheets should suffice. Just press gently—never rub.”
Stay Cool and Hydrated
The most impressive makeup even needs some help from the environment. If you are having an outdoor ceremony or reception, hide some hand-held fans in your decor and duck into the shade or air conditioning whenever there is a moment.
And be sure to keep yourself hydrated. “Drinking water is not only for your insides, but it actually can make your skin look better too,” says Raye. A cold drink and a cool breeze can do wonders, helping to keep your look and your spirit in good repair.
With a bit of preperation, careful product tweaks and some clever hacks, you can embark on summer nuptials looking and, more importantly, feeling, confident, glowing and worry-free — regardless of how high the mercury rises.
