How to Write the Perfect Proposal Speech: A Heartfelt Guide

Thinking to propose to your beloved one? Congratulations! This is one of those moments you will treasure in all of time. But in anticipation of your down-on-one-knee moment, you should consider what you will say. A proposal speech is “an intimate moment it should be a reflection of how you feel, the journey you went on to get here, and the life you are thinking about for the future,” says licensed therapist Camille Hartley, from Give Them Roots.

“It all comes down to having your language to match how you feel for your partner,” Hartley says. Think of it as a prologue to your vows — a promise of what you want to create together.” Plus, she says, the slower pace of the moment will make the speech even more powerful.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to write a memorable proposal speech.

Reflect on Your Love Story

Before you set pen to paper, take a moment to reflect on the journey you’ve been through together. Consider how you met, how you fell in love and what makes your coupledom special. I know what you love most about your partner. “What have I learned from this relationship?

Start with a Story

Nerves can cause you to rush through a proposal, but starting with a personal story sets the right tone. If there's a moment when you knew you were in love or a fun memory you both cherish, sharing that story will add authenticity and emotion to your words.

Write It Down and Rehearse

You may imagine you’ll simply “know what to say.” But writing it down will help clear your thoughts. Practice reading it out loud once you have a draft. The more you rehearse, the more comfortable and convincing you are going to sound — and the more likely you are not to forget something important in the heat of the moment.

Don’t Be Afraid of Emotions

With practice, however, you can keep emotions from getting the best of you — though, you know, if they do, that’s okay, too. Let your feelings show. You can only make the speech even stronger, memorable, more moving and everyone will respect and appreciate your courage.

Keep Traditions in Mind

If tradition matters to your partner, honor that. Propose if it means something to them, ask for their hand in marriage. And for God’s sake, when you’re ready, use the words, “Will you marry me?” while holding the ring. These small acts can mean everything.

Sample Proposal Speech

Here’s an exercise to start you on your own words:

"[Partner's name], I have loved you from the moment we [fill in memory or moment]. You have transformed my life in ways I never imagined possible. Your kindness, your strength, and your laughter bring me endless joy. I want nothing more than to keep growing with you, to stand by your side, and to create countless beautiful memories together. So now, with all my heart, I ask you: [Partner's name], will you marry me?"

Just keep in mind, there is no "right" way to propose. All you really need is honesty in your heart and devotion to each other. That’s what makes it unforgettable.
