6 Surprising Habits That Can Harm Your Skin Before the Big Day

Your skin is your body’s biggest organ, yet chances are it hasn’t been your No. 1 priority — particularly with all of the juggling you’re doing in advance of your wedding. With lifestyle on overdrive it’s easy for skincare to take a backseat. But if a radiant, glowing look is on your wedding wish list, it’s time to be more attentive. There are also a few common behaviors that might be subtly standing between you and that clear, glowing skin.

What the hell, really, is happening to our skin? From not sticking to your nightly skincare regime to the air circulating around your home, expert tips have been given to Bustle by dermatologist Dr Amara Taye of HavenDerm, and air quality expert Leo Carver of PureSpace Tech. Then they share what might be blocking the glow — and how to address it.

Falling Asleep With Makeup On

If there is one habit to break these days, it is going to bed without washing your face. “This is an important step that I always emphasize to clients so that we don’t miss any information,” Dr. Taye says. “It’s so tempting to skip when you’re tired, but going to sleep with makeup on is pore-clogging, breakout-exacerbating and irritating,” she said. You can’t go to bed with dirty skin!

Not Using SPF Every Day

Daily sunscreen application is essential — not only before a special event, but for long-term skin health. “Exposure to the sun leads directly to aging and to more pigmentation,” Dr. Taye says. “If you’re hoping for a more even skin tone by your wedding day, then SPF is a must. Find a broad-spectrum formula with at least SPF 30 and wear it regularly.

Outdoor Air Pollution

Recent research also highlights that environmental factors, such as air pollution, can damage your skin. “Airborne particles break down the skin’s natural defense over time,” says Carver. “That is especially the case in urban areas, where you have a source of pollution that might be more concentrated.” Living in a city? And consider extra protection in the form of antioxidant-rich skincare and air purifiers.

Indoor Air Pollution

Just because you’re indoors doesn’t mean the air you’re breathing is safe. “We spend the vast majority of our life indoors, and things that we do every day, such as cooking or burning candles, further contribute to indoor pollution,” Carver says. This can deaden your skin and disturb its ability to block out harmful agents. A high-quality air purifier or humidifier can also help.

Picking at Your Skin

As tempting as it may be, don’t pop pimples. “It usually spreads bacteria and causes post-acne marks, which might last longer than the pimple,” advised Dr. Taye. (Instead, use spot treatments, consider hydrocolloid patches or, for safer options, schedule an appointment with a dermatologist.)

Dirty Devices and Accessories

Phones and headphones touch your face every day — and that means they can harbor oil and bacteria. “Use an antibacterial cleaner and wipe your phone screen every day,” Dr. Taye recommends. “And don’t forget your earbuds — especially if they rest against your cheeks.”
